Rail Trail

As part of my training for hiking the Appalachian Trail later this year, I started on the Otago Central Rail Trail, from Middlemarch to Clyde in New Zealand.

On Wednesday morning, Jan. 9, Wally and I left grey, gloomy Dunedin and headed to the bright blue, sunny skies of Central Otago. At 2 pm, kitted out with my new ladies' camelback, camera, Ipod and (just in case) a cellphone.

The trail is 150 km (90 miles) long and flat, flat, flat. In spite of the late start, I got in a little over 5 miles before calling it a day.
